The Devisers

Cambridge Devised Theatre is committed to producing entertaining modern plays on a basis of thorough historical research, innovative devising, a strong text and high-quality artistic collaboration. Cambridge Devised Theatre's Artistic Directors Helen Cartwright and Ros Connelly first met at a new writing festival in Cambridge (2001). They worked together several times, including in 2002/3, when Helen performed in Ros' new play about Dickens' mistress and her sisters, The Amazing Ternan Sisters, before deciding to set up their own company.

Rosamund Connelly (Writer)
In 2000, Ros Connelly moved from writing fictional prose to writing plays, initially for youth and community theatre, with several pieces chosen for Festivals such as The Edge Festival and Hotbed in Cambridge, including Doing Well (Menagerie/Hotbed). Full-length plays include The Amazing Ternan Sisters, based on the life of Dickens' mistress, performed in the centenary celebrations for the WEA, and Paper Tiger (Classworks Youth Theatre/The Junction, Cambridge). Ros was a founder member of the Cambridge writing company WriteOn! She also creates and teaches courses in adult education, specialising in dramatic adaptations of classic works and Shakespeare's women, and is an experienced editor of academic books.

Helen Cartwright. Her recent credits include: Elizabeth in Stand By Your Van (Menagerie/Pleasance), Roberta in Can Any Mother Help Me (Foursight) Catherine (Part Exchange/ Edinburgh), Mrs Malaprop The Rivals (Oxford touring – Summer Festival), Womanin A and E (Rough Diamonds – Menagerie 2008), Fairy Bow Bells in Dick Whittington (Harlow Playhouse), Nurse in Romeo and Juliet (Harlow Playhouse), Esme in Amy's View (Peter Hall Company; understudy to Felicity Kendall touring and West End), Characters in Hotbed 2006 (Menagerie), Catherine in Arms and the Man (Salisbury Playhouse and touring), Flossie/Shelley in Nuts Co Co Nuts (La Cubana, commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival and touring in Spain), Millie in The Butterfly Lion, New Perspectives (Nottingham and touring), Grandma in Where's the Bear (Northampton and Derngate Theatres.and touring).

Alan Mooney is an established theatre and film actor. He trained at The Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin and at The International School of Acting, London. Recent credits include: Cyrano de Bergerac in 'Cyrano and the Moon' at the Wimbledon Theatre, Michael in 'Rickshaw', a film by Oliver Wurr and Vasily Borienko in 'Where do Spies Go?', a film by Fabio Cardascia. His voice-over credits and innumerable; they include tracks for Dominos, Homebase, McDonalds and Argos. During 2007 and 2008 he was the principal collaborator and actor in 'The Full Monteverdi', which toured the UK, the US and the rest of the world.

Kath Burlinson, Associate Artist
Kath Burlinson is a theatre maker specialising in devised/ensemble work. As well as co-devising and directing Ellen and Emily for Cambridge Devised Theatre,  Kath founded the Authentic Artist workshop and Authentic Artist Collective.

Jenny Culank, Associate Artist
Jenny Culank co-founded in the 1980s and is Artistic Director of Classworks Theatre Company. She is a highly experienced and award-winning director, in particular working on plays with and for young people and directing large-scale community projects.
